An exploration and insight into the forgotten dialect of the Northeast. Bringing Pitmatic back above ground.

Pitmatic is inspired by the dialect of the same name used by miners in the North East of England from the mid-19th to the latter quarter of the 20th century. This was originally an ISTD live brief, on the theme of “linguistic hybridity”. I eventually turned this into a self-initiated project to have greater control over various aspects of the design that would not fit within ISTD’s parameters.

Pitmatic evolved into multiple publications, each with an emphasis on typography and its ability to convey differing attitudes and messages through design choices. Much of the aesthetic, layout and design of these books is therefore a reflection of the subject matter this project revolves around.
